These days, going to the dentist is still a very expensive visit to make and Britons do suffer from dental anxiety even though the profession is striving to make it a more enjoyable experience by encouraging dentists to build a close and friendly rapport with their patients.
Unfortunately Britons have a poor record of oral health standards. In fact, the Centre for Dentistry estimates that only 1 in 10 UK adults meet the criteria for excellent oral health. In addition, roughly a mere third endure tooth decay caused by a sweet tooth addiction.
The most recent Consumer Oral Health Survey revealed that 27% of adult Brits don’t brush their teeth twice a day, whilst 33% of British adults say they never floss! Gender wise, 77% of the ladies are more likely to brush at least twice a day compared to 69% of men. Yet, a good routine of brushing and flossing are vital to maintain a decent level of oral health.
The situation is so bad that half of Brits believe that their poor level of oral health has the propensity to affect them professionally as well, due to the fact that their personal confidence is affected.
As for the kids, an NHS research revealed that in the last year 58.7% of them were examined by an NHS dentist. Sadly 15,000 children had tooth extractions and roughly 13,000 of these cases involved tooth decay. Ouch!!! For all the reasons mentioned earlier, it is so important to invest in preventive care and take all the necessary steps to avoid ending up at the dentist’s surgery.
Luckily, I had the pleasure of discovering a brilliant vegan, sustainable and ethical brand – Brushd- that provides a lovely sustainable and biodegradable range of oral care products (approved by dentists) thus helping to reduce plastic consumption whilst maintaining high standards of quality.

As you can see, the stylish toothbrush is entirely made of bamboo and it has charcoal infused bristles with soft texture. In addition, there is also the ergonomic, reusable and eco-friendly bamboo interdental brush that works a wonder every time! As for the toothpaste tablets that promote healthy gums and teeth, this is something I have never tried before and (I am really not scared of new things) they did not fail me either.
After a trial, I must say that I felt a real difference following each use as my mouth felt fresh, clean and nicely cared for. In terms of practicality, it’s so easy to carry when you travel or simply busy out and about. I enjoyed trying this innovative product and was reassured when I realized it is available with fluoride and without it as well. This was of course accompanied by the lovely mouthwash tablets. Like they say, there is always a first time for everything!
If one considers how long winter lasts in the UK and its lack of sunny days, it becomes vital to warn people for the need to spend as much time as possible outdoors and raise their intake of vitamin D.
Those individuals who have moved to the UK from sunnier countries, the BME population specially, are under a higher risk of vitamin D deficit. Therefore, in order to address this need, Brushd offers effective dental supplements which promote healthy gums, strong teeth and long term oral health in a non plastic bottle.
I must finally add that these products are so impressive that once they are no longer fit for purpose they will be disposed in a environmentally friendly way by its company since every order comes with a pre-paid mailer bag, meaning that when the brushes come to the end of their life, they can be sent back to the producing company and recycled correctly.
Bearing in mind the vast number of toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes, mouthwashes and dental floss that are produced and used with plastic, I quickly appreciated the importance of the creative and innovative flair of this range of products made possible via an alliance with revolutionary and environmentally centric technology.

All agreed! And I think the test of whether an eating place is civilised is whether they have toothpicks! I’ve just found that ethical FSC-certified, biodegradable versions of these can be sourced at a reasonable price too…
